Flâneur Workshop - Task 3 Unit X

Today we received our final Unit X task, which is a device to wander aimlessly and record where you have been through the process of photographs and sketches just to name a few. The word Flâneur is a French word which literally means to move through space, to stroll. In the spirit of this, I set off with my group and every 5 minutes we would roll a dice to decide which direction to go in (North, East, South or West). I photographed our journey using my phone, but I didn't look at any of the photographs until we arrived back at university. Here are my results from our walk:

Here are the direction we took every 5 Minutes as well as a Map of our journey:

Finally here are my most favoured photographs from today:

Unit X - Film Screening 3

For this weeks final screening, we watched two films. The first one was 'Meshes of the Afternoon' by Maya Deren 1943. The foley for this film was very metallic,e.g. a set of keys falling down stone stairs. This film was a mix of loud sounds followed by then sudden silences and showed a woman in a time loop, as at one point she is watching herself through a window. The films ends with the death of the woman and leading up to this point there became multiple version of her at separate points in the same timeline. This film has definite jumps in logic.

Here the key falls to the bottom of the steps shown below.

Lastly we watched a horror film called Eraserhead by David Lynch - The main character Henry has a one night stand with Mary which results in her pregnancy, so they move in together. The baby is born premature and looks like a baby dinosaur/lizard. As the film goes on Henry's head comes off and becomes an eraser, but then he suddenly wakes up. This black and white film has many abstract twists and ends with Henry killing the baby.
