Flâneur Workshop - Task 3 Unit X
Today we received our final Unit X task, which is a device to wander aimlessly and record where you have been through the process of photographs and sketches just to name a few. The word Flâneur is a French word which literally means to move through space, to stroll. In the spirit of this, I set off with my group and every 5 minutes we would roll a dice to decide which direction to go in (North, East, South or West). I photographed our journey using my phone, but I didn't look at any of the photographs until we arrived back at university. Here are my results from our walk:
Here are the direction we took every 5 Minutes as well as a Map of our journey:
Finally here are my most favoured photographs from today:

Unit X - Film Screening 3
For this weeks final screening, we watched two films. The first one was 'Meshes of the Afternoon' by Maya Deren 1943. The foley for this film was very metallic,e.g. a set of keys falling down stone stairs. This film was a mix of loud sounds followed by then sudden silences and showed a woman in a time loop, as at one point she is watching herself through a window. The films ends with the death of the woman and leading up to this point there became multiple version of her at separate points in the same timeline. This film has definite jumps in logic.

Here the key falls to the bottom of the steps shown below. |
Lastly we watched a horror film called Eraserhead by David Lynch - The main character Henry has a one night stand with Mary which results in her pregnancy, so they move in together. The baby is born premature and looks like a baby dinosaur/lizard. As the film goes on Henry's head comes off and becomes an eraser, but then he suddenly wakes up. This black and white film has many abstract twists and ends with Henry killing the baby.

Unit X - Film Screening 2
In this weeks film screening we watched a variety of films/videos. The first of which was a Music Video by Arthur Jafa for 'Solange' for a song called Cranes in the Sky - 2016:
I really like the view that can be seen in the background of this scene. |
I think that this video is great in showing the range of different backgrounds that are used, as well as the great use of different camera angles. I think that the people in the first video still stand out the most in their sky blue dresses when compared to the background.
Secondly we watched a short-film by Heather Phillipson entitled 'Of Violence' 2018. This film is based around how she is intruding on her dogs personal space and how her dog becomes an 'involuntary participant in human impositions – emotional, physical, linguistic and political'.
Finally today, we watched the film 'La Jetée ' - by Chris Marker. This was my second time of watching the film, but I still hear new quotes and enjoy it just as much as when I first watched it. It tells the story of dystopian future and a man who is marked by images from his childhood. He tries to use these images to send his mind into that past so he could change the future and he travels through time only to realise, that there is "no escape from" it.
Sarah Perks - Visiting Speaker
Sarah Perks is a Professor of Visual Art/Artistic Associate at MMU/Home. She has worked as a cross disciplinary collaborative curator and was originally a student at MMU. Additionally she led the entire artistic programme at 'The Corner House' in Manchester until it closed down and then she continued to work with 'Home' in Manchester. Perks said that 'ideas take time to develop' and that in order to succeed, it is good to 'immerse yourself in other disciplines'. I think that this idea is key to anyone, as sometimes the best ideas can come from looking at how other people work and then allowing that to be your inspiration.

Simon Liu - Visiting Speaker
Simon Liu is a film maker who collects materials for his work, from the places of his origin (Hong Kong, Stoke on Trent - UK and Brooklyn - New York). In his talk Liu spoke of how his work involves very 'labour intensive projects'. The most recent of which is a project entitled 'E-Ticket', which involves mixed media photographs and 16000 splices of film. Liu worked with 35mm still photographs and spliced some of the negatives together with tape in order to show the contrast between sentimentality vs a disregard for images.
Here is an example of a photograph in this film:
Liu said that 'E-Ticket' is his adaption of 'Dantes Inferno' and each photograph in this film lasts for 1/24th of a second, meaning that the images fly by so quickly, that the viewer doesn't have a chance to appreciate them. Additionally for this project he spent 3 months splicing images together and then 1 month editing those images.
I really like how Liu works with mixed media and how he splices different photographs together to gain these visual results. The way that the colours blend and then contrast with each other, really captures the view of the audience as there is so much to take away from watching one of his films.
Finally Liu said that he is 'interested in the idea of having so much work at once that the audience have to choose what they look at'. A key example of this in his work is when he does live performances, as he sometimes sets up multiple projectors with his films and then overlays the projected films on the wall.
Here is a further example of his work:

Unit X - Film Screening 1
Today was the first film screening for Unit X - 'Alice in Wonderland' (Alice) by Jan Svankmajer - 1988. This version of 'Alice' is one of the most interesting that I have seen, as it begins with the white rabbit being in a glass box (subject to taxidermy) that suddenly comes to life and breaks free from its casing. Alice then follows the rabbit into a drawer in a desk and the story continues. Overall I think that the stop motion animation works really well with the foley that has been applied to the film and it definitely kept me wondering about what was going to happen next.
Scene where Alice is attempting to get through the small door, before realising that she has to drink a potion to make herself smaller. |
This is the first version of 'Alice' I have seen, where the white rabbit is actually shown cutting off the heads of the March Hare, the Mad Hatter and some of 'Queen of Hearts' other subjects, one of which is shown above. |
This scene is very clever as Alice is pushed into a solution that turns her into a giant doll version of herself and the only way she can escape is through forcing herself out of the dolls body. |
